Ganesha Leela

Once upon a time, there lived in a town in Bengal a brahmin named Rudraketu well versed in the Vedas . His chaste and beautiful wife, Sharada, was obedient to dharma and always worshipped God and gurus. They prayed for children and she conceived. After nine months she gave birth to twin children who were named Devaantaka and Naraantaaka. Rudraketu rejoiced and distributed wealth and food to the priests and astrologers who predicted that the children would be famous and powerful when they grew up.

As the children grew, they gave great happiness to their parents and relatives. Sage Narada blessed them and said, “They will be strong and mighty. I advise them both to go to the holy mountain and propitiate Lord Shiva.” Then Narada initiated the twins with the five-lettered holy mantra OM NAMAH SHIVAAYA. After this, Sage Narada left for Brahmaloka chanting the Holy Name.

The young men, Devaantaka and Naraantaaka went to the holy mountain and began their austere penance. They stood with one leg and after a few days stood on their toes with uplifted arms meditating on OM NAMAH SHIVAAYA. Lord Shiva was pleased with their austerity and devotion and appeared in their presence. They saw Lord Shiva mounted on the bull Nandi, wrapped in tiger skin, with five heads and ten arms, His head decked with the crescent moon and the river Ganges flowing from his matted locks. Serpents coiled ‘round His body which was smeared with holy ashes.

Leaping with joy, Devaantaka and Naraantaaka fell prostrate at His lotus feet and prayed to the Lord. “O great God Shiva, we are extremely blessed with Your darshan . We feel this is a great blessing to our entire family. Our ancestors will attain heaven with the grace of Thine. We know that nothing is impossible to Thee. Kindly shower Your grace upon us.”

Lord Shiva, pleased, gave them permission to ask any boon of their choice.

With joined palms, the twins prayed, “O Lord Shiva, we want to be invincible and invulnerable in all three worlds. We should never meet death from celestials, demons, human beings, evil spirits, or any creature created by the creator in this whole universe. Finally, we pray for devotion to Your lotus feet.”

Lord Shiva granted the boons and disappeared. Devaantaka and Naraantaaka returned to their abode and narrated all that had happened to their parents who embraced their sons and rejoiced at the news of their great success.

Receiving the blessings of their parents and other priests, they set on their journey to conquer the three worlds. Devaantaka said to his brother that he would go to conquer the celestials in Svargaloka (Paradise). He requested Naraantaaka to conquer everyone on the planet earth and in Patala , the nether regions.

Seeing an auspicious moment, Devaantaka invaded Amaravate, the capital of Indra. He destroyed Nandanavana, the beautiful garden of the devas . He conquered the devas by the might of the boon of Shiva. He even cut off the most powerful weapon of Indra, the thunderbolt (Vajraayudha , the diamond weapon).
